Wexford Youths into Continental Tyres WFAI Cup Final

The Continental Tyres Women's FAI Women's Senior Cup Final will be contested by Wexford Youths WAFC and Shelbourne Ladies FC at Aviva Stadium on Sunday, November 8.
17th Oct 2015

The two teams booked their place in the showpiece event on Saturday night when they overcame Peamount United and Shelbourne U18 LFC respectively.

At Morton Stadium, Noelle Murray proved to be the difference for Shelbourne Ladies as she fired in a hat-trick, while Katie McCabe converted a penalty kick as Casey McQuillan's team secured a 4-0 win.

Shelbourne are a newly-formed team following a merger with Raheny United, who are the current holders of the competition, so McQuillan will be bringing some familiar faces back to the Aviva Stadium.

"It's a great achievement to get to the Cup final. The next win is the most important win - that's the way I look at it. We want to write the Shelbourne name on to the Cup," said McQuillan.

In the other semi-final, Continental Tyres Women's National League champions Wexford were ultimately too strong for Peamount as Claire O'Riordan scored a hat-trick in a 6-2 triumph at Ferrycarrig Park.

Aisling Frawley, Emma Hansberry, and Carol Breen were also on target for Will Doyle's side, while Emma Byrne and Lucy McCartan got on the scoresheet for Peamount.

"We're delighted to get through to the final. We had a job to do and we tricked all the boxes in doing it," said Doyle after their victory.

The Cup Final has proved to be a terrific occasion in recent years as it shares the bill with the Irish Daily FAI Cup Final and has been broadcast live on RTE2 in front of big crowds at the Aviva Stadium.

Wexford and Shelbourne will have WNL games to focus on over the coming weeks, but they can begin their preparations for the biggest day in women's domestic football following their respective semi-final wins.
