UCD hit ten against Ulster in Collingwood Cup

Holders UCD had it all too easy on the opening day of the Irish Universities Collingwood Cup competition when they breezed into the semi finals with a comprehensive 10-0 trouncing of the hosts Ulster University at Jordanstown.

A brilliant hat trick from striker Danu Kinsella Bishop plus Dara Keane’s equally impressive double all in the second half were the highlights of a very one sided affair.

Rossa McAllister and Ciaran Behan had given the Belfield side a 2-0 half time lead but the flood gates opened on the resumption and together with the contribution from Kinsella Bishop and Keane further goals from Ronan Cowhey, Donal Higgins and Danny Norris completed the embarrassing rout for the home side.

UCC will be UCD opponents in to-days semi final after they overcame a spirited University of Galway side to seal a 4-2 win. Full-back Rian O’Sullivan 20-yard free put the Cork boys in front on 25 minutes but ten minutes later an equally good finish from Stephen Healy had Galway level at the break.

UCC then gained the upper hand when Simon Falvey struck with a brilliant brace and Douwe Van Sinderan added the fourth. Galway kept battling away and centre back James Turkington did manage a second but it was too little too late.

University of Limerick looked the more impressive side early on against DCU when Adam Foley shot them into a 15th minute lead. However, a host of missed chances to stretch that advantage was spurned and it remained 1-0 at the break.

DCU had goalkeeper Tom Bourke red carded for handling the ball outside the box on the hour and when Dave McCarthy added a second for UL the Dublin side’s task looked doomed.

Owen Benson kept the tie alive with a DCU goal but they just failed to conjure up an equaliser. Maynooth will face UL in today’s semi-final after they finally got the better of Queens University to come out with a 3-1 win.

Queens had much the better of the first half and led 1-0 coming up to the break through a Lorcan McIlroy striker. But when Success Edogun headed the equaliser from a Dean O’Shea corner on the stroke of half time it managed to get Maynooth back into the game.

O’Shea then fired in the second direct from a corner early after the break and this steadied Maynooth who went on to net a third from Edogun towards the finish.
