UCD and Salthill Devon compete for U20 title
UCD and Salthill Devon will tonight compete for the last piece of League of Ireland 2009 silverware when they meet in the Under-20 Dr. Tony O’Neill Cup Final.
The UCD Bowl will host the match, which will see two sides who experienced success at senior level in 2009 attempt to replicate that form at underage level. Having won the League of Ireland First Division title, UCD will be looking to add the Under-20 Dr. Tony O’Neill Cup to their trophy collection. However, after a season which saw their senior side win the right for promotion from the Newstalk A Championship to the League of Ireland First Division, Salthill Devon will also be looking to end 2009 on a high.
Salthill Devon are managed by former Galway United and Shamrock Rovers striker John Brennan and believes his side will be capable of providing a strong opposition to a much-fancied UCD side.
“We won the Under-21 title a few years ago, becoming the first amateur team to do so, so to win the Under-20 title would be fantastic for the club,” said Brennan. “The players who won the Under-21 title have gone on to represent the club in the Newstalk A Championship and next season could be in the League of Ireland First Division. Having success at underage level is fantastic for the club and it gives younger players something to aim for.
“We have teams starting at Under-6 level, right up to senior level. I have been head coach here for ten years and in my opinion it is one of the best clubs in the country in terms of youth set-up and facilities.
“UCD are certainly favourites. They have a great team with some really good players, but we will give as good as we get. We have already beaten Sporting Fingal and Drogheda United so we have shown that we are capable of beating top teams.”
