David McMillan has been selected as the Airtricity/Soccer Writers Association of Ireland Player of the Month for May. The award was presented to the UCD striker this morning (Thursday 17 June) by Kevin Greenhorn, Managing Director of Airtricity.

McMillan enjoyed a prolific run of form which saw the Templeogue man score five times as the Students moved into a promising position in the standings. McMillan struck during wins over frontrunners Dundalk and St Patrick’s Athletic, and bagged a brace in a convincing six-nil win over Bray Wanderers. The 21-year-old also netted in the two-all draw against Galway United at Terryland Park.

David, who followed brother Evan into the first team at the Belfield Bowl, always felt UCD were likely to hold their own in the topflight. "I suppose we wanted to keep on looking up and away from the bottom of the table, probably everyone but the players and management felt we’d find it difficult," said McMillan. "Thankfully that hasn’t been the case, and while it’s an honour to get this award it really could have gone to any one of my teammates."

For David, who initially attended UCD games as a ballboy with his local club Templeogue United, the Students have always played attractive football. "I think if you go back to Pete Mahon’s time at the club UCD were known as a footballing team, and that’s been evident right the way through to Martin Russell."

In terms of influences David was quick to credit the contribution of soccer development officer Diarmuid McNally. "It was Diarmuid who got things moving with the scholarship, and gave me the experience I initially needed with the UCD Leinster Senior League team. That certainly helped and in time it was terrific for me to follow my brother Evan into the first team," concluded David.

Sporting Fingal midfielder Ronan Finn and Sligo Rovers ace Richie Ryan finished second and third respectively behind McMillan in the monthly award.

Presenting the award Airtricity Managing Director Kevin Greenhorn commented:

"I would like to congratulate David McMillan on being named the latest monthly winner of the Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association Player of the Month awards, which is a well-deserved win following his highly impressive run of form in the Airtricity League in recent weeks.

"It’s an extremely exciting time right now for the Airtricity League - competition for the top flight is fierce among all the clubs plus there’s huge anticipation building around the upcoming clash between our own Airtricity League XI and visitors Manchester United at the Aviva Stadium in August. I know every league player, including David, will be keen to secure their place in the Airtricity League XI squad and I wish them all luck as we prepare for this historic sporting occasion."

Airtricity, sponsor of domestic league football in Ireland, is the proud sponsor of the Soccer Writers’ Association Player of the Month awards for 2010, and will sponsor the Association’s annual Personality of the Year Gala Awards, being held later this year
