Stella Maris claim FAI Umbro Women’s U16 Title
A sparkling display by Niamh Kearney was key to famous Dublin Club, Stella Maris lifting the FAI Umbro Women’s FAI U16 Cup in Castlebar on Sunday.
Kearney - one of three Stella players who was called into the Irish U19 squad for this week’s UEFA qualifiers in Croatia rounded-off her player of the match display with the last goal of in a 3-0 victory over Killala in Castlebar.
Lisa Murphy thundered Stella into the lead from Rosanne Maguire’s corner-kick after only three minutes before Kearney’s blistering run on 23 minutes set up Nadine Hughes for the second.
Killala’s Aoileen Collins came close to halving the deficit before half-time but Kearney had the final say 15 minutes from the end with the third to ensure that Stella claimed only their third ever FAI Umbro U16 Cup title.
All the more pleasing was the fact that all bar one of their players had developed through their academy set-up. Stella Maris will now look towards league glory knowing that avoiding defeat against St. Francis in their final game of the season will land the league title for the Dublin side.
