Avondale United 2 Sheriff YC 3Sheriff YC picked up their seventh trophy of 2013 by beating Avondale United 3-2 in an exciting Tom Hand Memorial Cup Final at Turners Cross, Cork.The Tom Hand Cup is played annually between the FAI Intermediate and Junior Cup winners and the junior side’s victory gives them a great boost heading into next Friday’s trip to Tallaght to face Airtricity League side Shamrock Rovers in the Third Round of the FAI Ford Senior CupSheriff YC started the game without five of their regular players and were forced to play Man of the Match John Lester in a sweeper’s role where his vast experience was always to the fore as he turned in a polished performance over the 90 minutes.The Dubliners got off to the perfect start when in the seventh minute Kevin Lynch fired home from a tight angle to put Sheriff one up.With Darren Dunne pulling the strings in the middle Sheriff had the majority of play but were caught in the 14th minute when some sloppy defensive play saw them concede a penalty which Avondale’s Roy Long converted.Eight minutes later Sheriff restored their lead with a tremendous strike from Darren Dunne whose shot ball flew in to the top corner of the net despite the heroic attempts of Daniel O’ Leary to stop it.Things went from bad to worse from Avondale when, in the 43rd minute, referee Tom Tully was left with little choice but to dismiss Avondale’s Roy Long for stamping on Sheriff’s keeper Austin O’ Neill.Sheriff were content to allow Avondale make all the play in the second half and, with Karl Caulfield dictating play, it was a dangerous tactic to use as Avondale equalised in the 80th minute when Danny Long fired home from close range.Avondale had the belief that they could go on and win the game but were caught on the break in added on time when Alan Mc Cabe rounded the keeper to fire home the winning goal for Sheriff YCTom Hand’s sons, Patrick and Lorcan, were in attendance and they witnessed an excellent curtain raiser to the amateur season.Avondale United: Daniel O’ Leary, Dave Kiely, Eoghan Lougheed, Declan Cahill, Mark Horgan, Karl Caulfield, Brian Murphy, Kenny Murphy, Roy Long, Danny Long.
