Avondale United of Cork were denied in their efforts to win the FAI Intermediate Cup for a third consecutive season in 2007/’08 by another Cork team, Douglas Hall. Douglas defeated them on penalties in a replay of their quarter-final tie.
Douglas Hall’s most famour former player is Colin Doyle, goalkeeper to Birmingham City. He was capped by the Republic of Ireland senior international team against Ecuador on 23/05/’07.
Douglas Hall continued their good work with an impressive 2-0 win over Bangor Celtic in the semi-final. They made light of having to travel to Dublin and won with goals from Brian Wilkinson and Joe McSorley, who converted a penalty.
Wayside Celtic won the Cup in 2004/’05 season and they met Rockmount in the semi-final of the current competition. Wayside defeated Rockmount in the 2005 final.
Rockmount travelled to Dublin for the game and the first meeting between the two failed to produce a goal. Rockmount prevailed when they met again in the replay at Whitechurch.
The final between Rockmount and Douglas Hall was played in Turner’s Cross. Rockmount’s greater experience told on the day and they won 2-0 with goals from Ross O’Callaghan and Pat Keane.
