The FAI National Irish Bank Deaf Summer Soccer Schools are in their third successive year with 65 children taking part this year between the ages of 7 and 15.
The camps took place in St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf in Cabra with children attended from St. Joseph’s Boys School for the Deaf, Rosary Post Primary School for Deaf Girls and Marion Primary School for Deaf Girls.
The 4-day camp was organised through the FAI’s Football For All programme, in conjunction with FAI Community Development Officers.
National Coordinator for Football for All, Oisin Jordan, had this to say about the camps: “Three years ago Paul O’Reilly, Fingal County Council Development Officer, had the idea of running a Summer Soccer School for deaf children to help promote football and development of players for the FAI’s deaf programme. It has been a huge success over the past three years through great partnerships between the FAI and the deaf schools involved. We hope to continue these Summer Soccer Schools in the future ensuring football plays a vital role in the lives of deaf children.”
The FAI have also run a number of coaching courses in the schools to allow children who are too old to participate in the camps themselves to become involved in coaching football.
