Last-gasp Cork City win Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup Final
It took 120 minutes for the game to find a winner as both teams had a number of chances throughout the game but Maguire scored the final goal of the 2016 season.
It was Dundalk who had the better of the chances in the first half. Daryl Horgan, who was called up to the Republic of Ireland squad this week, almost found the net when David McMillan flicked on to find his run but his chipped effort was well saved by Mark McNulty.
McMillan had a better chance just a minute later. Horgan turned provider as he slid McMillan in behind on the right side of the area but his low effort was saved by the feet of McNulty.
Cork’s first real chance came 30 minutes from time as Karl Sheppard’s right-sided corner found the head of Maguire who had his flicked attempt cleared off the line by Sean Gannon.
McMillan put a Ronan Finn cross wide of the right-hand post in the 73rd minute before substitute Chiedozie Ogbene was brilliantly denied by Gary Rogers with a low first-time shot from Maguire’s cross eight minutes from time.
Dundalk could have won the game in normal time as Horgan found a wonderful cross to the back post but substitute Ciaran Kilduff put his header over the bar and the game went into extra time.
Both sides had few chances in extra time as they searched for a winner and it was to come in the final minute of the game. A long Steven Beattie throw wasn’t cleared and it dropped for Maguire in the area who turned and saw his deflected shot roll into the bottom corner to cue delirium in the Cork City end.
