Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup semi-finals this weekend

The Road to the Aviva continues this weekend as the semi-finals of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Senior Cup take place on Friday and Sunday with both games being shown live on RTÉ2. None of the four teams left in the competition have played at the Aviva Stadium so that adds extra spice as they face the final hurdle before a yearned for trip to Dublin 4.
2nd Oct 2015

First up will be the meeting of Dundalk and Longford Town at Oriel Park on Friday evening. With a successful defence of their League title virtually wrapped up with four games to go, Dundalk are eyeing a first double in 27 years but they face a Longford Town side that has done well in the top flight following their promotion from the First Division last season.

Dundalk have to go back to 2002 for their last FAI Cup Final appearance when, ironically, they beat a Bohemians side managed by their current boss Stephen Kenny. In another twist, Kenny began his managerial career at Longford while his opposite number, Tony Cousins, started his League of Ireland career at Dundalk.  Longford won back to back FAI Cups in 2003 and 2004 and appeared in the 2007 final at the RDS where they lost 1-0 to Cork City.

The Leesiders have been through a lot and are looking to reach their first final since then. Manager John Caulfield was handed a new contract this week and would love to follow that up with a first trophy but his side face a tricky trip on Sunday to the Carlisle Grounds to face a Bray Wanderers side that have been rejuvenated under the stewardship of Mick Cooke.

Cooke knows all about cup finals having guided Drogheda United to three cup finals in 2013 after winning the EA SPORTS Cup Final in 2012 and is looking to steer Bray to a third cup final and their first since 1999.

If replays are required then the Cork City v Bray Wanderers replay is scheduled for Monday, October 12 at 7.45pm in Turner’s Cross while the Longford Town v Dundalk replay would take place on Tuesday, October 13, in City Calling Stadium at 7.45pm. Replays will be played to a finish wih provision for extra-time and penalty. The 2015 Irish Daily Mail FAI Senior Cup Final is scheduled for Sunday, November 8, in Aviva Stadium.

Elsewhere, there is an outstanding SSE Airtricity League game on Friday where Galway United host Sligo Rovers at Eamonn Deacy Park in a Connacht derby.
