FAI Umbro Women’s Senior Challenge Cup 2009

The 2009 competition kicked-off on the week-end of April 5, 2009 with St. Francis intent on winning their second consecutive title and Peamount United, last season’s losing finalists, keen to make up for that disappointment.

St. Francis scored a dramatic win over Peamount in last year’s final. The teams were level 1 - 1 going into added time when St. Francis were awarded a penalty that produced the winning goal.

Peamount United were obviously well geared to go one step better this season. They opened their challenge in impressive style with a 4-2 win over the Wexford District League in the first round of the competition for 2009.

A number of teams, including Galway Ladies and the Mayo League, advanced to the next round courtesy of a bye.

St. Francis were given a rare fright in the second round when they ran up against a very determined Templeogue United.

St. Francis needed a goal in extra time to see off their opponents and advance to the quarter-finals where they played Raheny United.

Peamount kept their Cup hopes very much alive when they travelled to Cork to play Wilton United in the second round. A 2-1 win set up a quarter-final match against Stella Maris.

St. Francis scored an excellent win over Raheny United 1-0 in the quarter-final that was very competitive. And in a repeat of last season’s final, St. Francis once again overcame Peamount 2-1 in the semi-final to show that they had mastered the art of closing out very tight matches.

St. Catherines joined them in the final after a battling performance that gave them a win over Cork Women’s and Schoolgirls’ League selection in the semi-final.

St. Francis needed to be at their best to win the final by the only goal from Sharon Cullen in the 63rd minute. They had the better of the second half as they clinched their second consecutive win in the competition.

Their manager, Pat Heffernan, was justifiably proud of his charges and afterwards he paid tribute to both teams for producing a contest that was worthy of the final.

He said: "There has been a great rivalry with St. Catherine’s on the pitch and but plenty of respect for each other.

"The teams served up a great game of football and the 1,000 spectators thoroughly enjoyed the occasion."
