FAI/ETB selection touring Spain
The Irish side opened with a 1-1 draw last Thursday versus U.D Pilas, a semi-professional side. Head Coach Gerry Davis described the game as a good workout.
"It was a good workout for our young players as they were a senior side with experienced players and more physical than our younger side but I thought we applied ourselves well and could have won it in the end."
A goal from Shelbourne's Alex OHanlon from the penalty spot after Waterford United’s Alex Phelan was fouled was just reward for the efforts of the side.
"We should have won the game in the end but we managed to get everyone on the pitch so that was a bonus", Davis added.
On Tuesday night, the side played Real Betis, in Seville. The Betis side consisted largely of youth players and members of their B team.
The FAI/ETB side went behind early on in the game but came back through a goal from Alex Phelan from Waterford ETB. Betis scored again to go 2-1 up at half-time.
Davis's side scored from a penalty through Alex O Hanlon, after Liam McGrathwas fouled in the box. The visitors won the game with the last kick of the game after great work from Ray O'Sullivan and Alex O'Hanlon saw Phelan score his second.
"It was a great test for the lads", Davis said after the game. "We're unbeaten now after two games. It's a brilliant experience for the lads. I'd like to thank Erasmus+ for helping us fund this trip. It will prove beneficial to the lads' future careers."
