FAI seeks Oireachtas Committee postponement

The Board of the Football Association of Ireland has today written to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport asking for an invitation to meet with the Committee on October 16th to be deferred.
4th Oct 2019

The letter, sent by company secretary Rea Walshe, acknowledges that Sport Ireland have already asked for a postponement of their appearance before the Committee on the same day.

The Board has asked the Oireachtas Committee to wait to call the FAI before it again until the Kosi Report, commissioned by Sport Ireland, is published. The FAI has yet to be given any date for the publication of this Kosi report.

The letter also states that the appointment of four Independent Directors, including an Independent Chairperson, to the Board is imminent whilst several key members of the FAI Board and Executive Management team are only due back in Ireland on the afternoon of October 16th after the EURO 2020 qualifier in Switzerland the night before.

The letter, addressed to Paul Kelly on behalf of the Joint Committee, states: “Thank you for your letter of the 1st inst inviting myself and Noel Mooney and any other appropriate representatives from the FAI to a meeting of the Committee to discuss ‘Governance at, and funding to, the Football Association of Ireland, and related matters’.

“Unfortunately, not all appropriate representatives are available on the 16th October as the Republic of Ireland Senior Team are playing a EURO 2020 qualifier in Switzerland on the 15th October next.

“We also note that Sport Ireland have requested that their meeting scheduled for the same day be postponed until after the release of the Kosi report and we would ask the same, particularly in circumstances where our independent Directors including the Independent Chair are due to be appointed in the coming weeks.”
