Dublin IT win CFAI Cup
Jordi Ebanda capitalised on a quick corner routine with 15 minutes remaining to score the only goal of the game.
Both sides had chances throughout the game with a last-ditch challenge from Jamie Broderick denying Reginald John from giving Athlone IT the lead.
DIT’s best chance in the opening half fell to Adam Harney who picked up the pieces of a blocked Darragh Noone free kick to test Cathal Mannion.
Lee Steacy had to be on his toes just before half-time when Luke Dignam’s audacious effort forced the Shelbourne keeper to tip the ball over the bar.
The Dublin side began the second half the brighter side with Joe Doyle having a number of efforts that forced Mannion into several smart saves.
Mannion had no answer when a quickly taken corner from the right found Ebanda who volleyed home.
Athlone would not go down without a fight and deep into stoppage time, Reginald John found himself in front of goal and looked destined to score but for the bravery of Steacy who dived onto the ball and sealed victory for Gavin Fleming’s side.
