CHERRY Orchard FC secured the FAI Umbro U17 Cup for the eighth time in the club’s history after victory over Leeds AFC from Cork at Turner’s Cross today.

The Dubliners led 3-0 at the break. They went on to join fellow Dublin outfit St Kevin’s Boys at the top of the competition’s roll of honour as they secured the cup for the first time since 2003.

Leeds had been unbeaten all season but found themselves under the cosh from the start as Orchard gave them little time to settle.

Last year’s runners-up were denied by a brilliant Liam Coughlan reaction save, but Coughlan erred in the 12th minute spilling a cross for namesake Gareth Coughlan to gleefully hammer home.

Leeds were limited to shots from long range as keeper Coughlan prevented Derek Daly from adding to the lead.

But in drizzly conditions Orchard scored twice in the space of four minutes before the break. The first came from man-of-the-match Troy Carey who danced away from three Leeds defenders before shooting to the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Then Carey set up Coughlan to tap-in his second, after Kyle McNamara had taken Carey’s initial shot off the line.

Darren Butler and Eric Murphy had chances before the break, but Leeds got back into the tie four minutes after the restart when Stuart Murphy’s shot ran across the goal for Brendan Kenny to finish.

But Leeds’ glimmer of hope was quickly quenched as their captain Ciaran Hanafin took down Carey to concede a penalty and earn himself a second yellow card. Josh Collins sent Coughlan the wrong way with the spot kick.

The Ballyfermot side were able to open up Leeds on the break and added a fifth in the 65th minute when U17 international Darragh Markey slammed into the roof of the net after Coughlan had saved from Daly.

Orchard coasted to the final whistle while Leeds managed a consolation goal as Mark O’Donnell forced home a corner with eight minutes remaining.

Timmy Foley also hit the crossbar in stoppage time, however Cork’s wait for an FAI Umbro U17 Cup winner goes on.
