Catherine’s look to end St. Francis domestic dominance
The 2009 FAI Umbro Women’s Senior Cup will be contested between Dublin’s St. Catherine’s LFC and St. Francis FC on Saturday, July 25th in Richmond Park, Dublin. The final takes place before reigning champions, St. Francis jet off to Cyprus for the UEFA Champions League where they will face Rossiyanka (Russia), Maccabi Holon (Israel) and Apollon Limassol (Cyprus) in group 6 in the first round of the UEFA Champions League which will be held from the 30th July - August 4th.
St. Francis FC remain unbeaten in the competition for two years after they came through a tough path to the final with victories over Templeogue, Raheny United and last year’s beaten finalists, Peamount United. St. Catherine’s LFC from the Liberties in Dublin recorded impressive victories over 2007 champions, Galway before putting Lifford Ladies and the Cork Women’s League to the sword in the quarter-final and semi-final respectively.
Pat Heffernan, manager of St. Francis, said: "This will be the most important fortnight in the short history of the St. Francis Women’s section. The girls have worked really hard to reach a second successive FAI Umbro Women’s Senior Cup this Saturday and then it’s off to Cyprus on Tuesday for the UEFA Champions’ League group stages.
"Saturday’s final should be a great occasion and a tremendous game of football on the fabulous Richmond Park pitch. St. Catherine’s will be as keen as us to win this trophy and we’ll have to be on our game to come away with the trophy again."
