Ballyglass (Mayo)   3 - 1   Raheny United (Dublin)
Deirdre Doherty                    Laureen Ebbs
Karen Lilly (2)

Ballyglass created history when they captured the FAI Umbro Women’s Intermediate Cup for the first time at Milebush Park, Castlebar. They were celebrating in South Mayo after a merited victory over Raheny in an exciting final.

Ballyglass had to come from behind to win. They did so with real fire and determination to wipe out an early lead goal that came as early as the 22nd minute.

The goal was one to be proud of as Laureen Ebbs struck a shot sweetly from outside the penalty are and the ball took a deflection as it sped past goalkeeper Katrina Connolly. The goalkeeper had made a superb save to defy Sinead O’Farrelly minutes earlier.

Ballyglass enjoyed the greater share of possession but took a while to break down the disciplined Raheny defence. When they succeeded in making the break, they eagerly capitalised on the double with two goals in the space of six minutes before half-time.

The hardworking Deirdre Doherty was rewarded for her persistent play when she registered a fine equalising goal. Her shot at goal looped over the fully-stretched arms of United goalkeeper, Therese O’Connor.

Then Karen Lilly gave Ballyglass the lead with a glorious finish from the edge of the Ballyglass 18-yard box after being set up by Claire Egan’s defence-splitting pass. And Cora Staunton went agonisingly close to snatching a third goal for Ballyglass before the interval with a blistering effort that struck a post.

Ballyglass sealed their memorable triumph 10 minutes into the second half when Lilly executed her second goal in style. She struck after the opening had been created for her by the influential Cora Staunton.

Spirited Raheny battled hard right to the end but failed to break down a Ballyglass rearguard in which central defender Yvonne Byrne produced the game’s outstanding individual performance.
