Two acts of lunacy decided what was billed as the tie of the round as St Pat’s overcame a eight-man Dundalk team at Oriel Park in the FAI Ford Cup Third Round tie on Friday night.

Dundalk’s indiscipline cost them as Ciaran McGuigan, JJ Melligan and Garry Breen all saw Anthony Buttimer’s red card.

Packed weekend of FAI Ford Cup action in store

Sixteen FAI Ford Cup Third Round ties will be contested this week, with the meeting of the Airtricity League’s top-two the standout tie from the dozen scheduled for Friday night.

Premier Division leaders Dundalk will welcome St. Patrick’s Athletic to Oriel Park (7.45pm) hoping to embark on the Cup run which concludes with them winning their first FAI Cup since 2002.

It’s been a much longer wait for St. Pat’s to taste Cup glory - their last success came in 1961 - but the Saints are on an upward curve this term and confident of landing some silverware.
