Bitter disappointment for Ireland Women's U19s at UEFA Second Qualifying phase

Bitter disappointment for Ireland Women's U19s at UEFA Second Qualifying phase   Sweden 2-0 Republic of Ireland                                 BanuÅ¡ić ‘69                                                 Hammarlund '84     The Republic of Ireland Women’s U19s team’s UEFA Championship dreams ended in bitter disappointment today after losing their final group game to title holders Sweden in the Netherlands. Ireland entered the game as table leaders after beating Italy and hosts Netherlands, and needed just a draw to secure qualification for the finals this Summer. However, despite starting the game well and dominating play in the first half, a second half goal resulting from a fumble between Ireland’s two centre halves and goalkeeper Jillian Maloney turned the game around. A rejuvenated Swedish side then began to regain confidence, and added insult to Irish injury with another goal by Pauline Hammarlund in the 84th minute, crushing Irish dreams of qualification. Ireland created many chances, with captain Denise O’Sullivan at the helm of most goal attempts, but was unlucky not to change the scoreboard in Sportpark Tanthof – Zuid this afternoon. Ireland were rocked by two injuries from their more experienced players Rianna Jarrett, Clare Shine  before the game, and ultimately paid the price as a result. Sarah Rowe was also sidelined after coming down with a virus, however made a brief appearance for the girls in green in the second half, before being substituted by Kelly Halligan in the 89th minute. Speaking after the game, head coach Dave Connell spoke of the result, ‘We are hugely disappointed with today’s result, but it wasn’t to be for us unfortunately. We can all be extremely proud of ourselves however, and beating two big football nations in the group is a great achievement. All we can do now is build from this and move on. We’ll still have 12 of this year’s squad eligible next year, so the future is bright. The girls can hold their heads high.’ There is one qualifying place left for the highest ranked second place team with the best record against the sides first and third in their pool. However, it is unlikely that Ireland will qualify. IRELAND: Jillian Maloney, Grace Wright, Lauren Murphy, Chloe Mustaki, Ciara O'Connell, Emma Hansberry, Denise O'Sullivan (C), Katie McCabe, Orlagh Nolan (Sarah Rowe ’62- Kelly Halligan ‘89), Gemma McGuinness (Shauna Newman ’83), Jetta Berrill. Ireland started the game with vigour, putting pressure on the hosts from the outset, with Ciara O’Connell having a shot on goal after six minutes. Rianna Jarrett was then substituted after just 16 minutes with a knee ligament injury, but Ireland retained composure and Clare Shine found the net after 22 minutes after a ball was played over the Dutch defence by Emma Hansberry. Katie McCabe replied after just three minutes and fired the ball into the left corner of the Dutch net after Denise O’Sullivan laid the ball on for her. Ireland faltered in the 68th minute when Myrthe Moorrees responded to Ireland’s two goals beating goalkeeper Jillian Maloney, and bringing the Netherlands back into the game. Ireland remained strong however, and coped well with changes to the line-up when goal scorer Clare Shine was substituted at 88 minutes after getting a knock to the head. Captain fantastic Denise O’Sullivan was the stand-out player for Ireland this afternoon, and was a dominant presence throughout the game. Head coach Dave Connell also praised the back four for their hard work this evening, along with striker Sarah Rowe. Ireland have a few injury worries ahead of Tuesday’s game, as Rianna Jarrett and Clare Shine will both be assessed by the Irish medical team to determine whether they are fit enough to feature against Sweden. Speaking after today’s game, head coach Dave Connell said ‘We’ve had two magnificent results against two great nations, who have fantastic reputations in Women’s football. Italy won the tournament three years ago, and Sweden are the holders, but the girls dug deep and came up trumps. We’re only one step away from qualifying for the finals, but we’re proud of the girls no matter what happens.’ Ireland now sit at the top of Group 1 with six points after holders Sweden drew 2-2 against Italy this evening, meaning they need at least a draw to qualify. Ireland Women's U19s beaten 0-1 by Austria in friendly fixture

Ireland Women’s U19s beaten 0-1 by Austria in friendly fixture   The Republic of Ireland  Women’s Women’s U19 squad were beaten 0-1 in a friendly fixture against Austria this evening (Thursday). The game, part of their preparations for next month’s UEFA European Championship Elite phase, was played in very wet conditions in Home farm FC, Whitehall. Ireland started the game very strongly, dominating possession throughout the first half. Castlebar Celtic’s Emma Hansberry was unlucky to score after an on target shot at 33 minutes. Ciara O’Connell looked strong in central defence making several clearances, with Grace Wright at her side making many runs down the right wing. Ireland were unlucky not to make it 1-0 after a super Kelly Halligan cross to Orla Nolan, who narrowly failed to connect in front of goal. Austria came close to changing the score board with a corner in the 33rd minute with a header from Mona-Sophie Kohn, which narrowly went wide. Both sides were 0-0 at the interval. Manager, Dave Connell, was without key players due to injury and senior call-ups, made two substitutions at half time replacing Orla Nolan and Katie McCabe with Amy O’Connor and Gemma McGuinness respectively. Austria looked rejuvenated in the second half, and controlled possession throughout. Ireland remained strong, creating many chances. However, Austria defended well and dominated on the counter attack. At 60 minutes, Jelena Prvulovic’s clear shot on the Irish goal was saved by goalkeeper Jillian Maloney, who was deemed ‘Woman of the match’ by Dave Connell after a convincing performance. Greencastle’s Gemma McGuinness also performed well after her introduction, and served as a worthy replacement for Katie McCabe who was struck down and unable to continue after a heavy tackle in the first half. Connell made several more changes introducing Jetta Berrill, Rebekah Carroll, Avril Brierley and Shaunagh Newman in the second half making use of each of his substitutes. Maloney made another convincing save at 75 minutes when Jelena Prvulovic  laid the ball forward for Jessica Starchi in front of goal. However, Austria’s efforts were rewarded in the 79th minute, when a free kick, laid in high, connected with Number 9 Jessica Starchi who found the top left corner of the Irish net. Austria lead 0-1 coming into the final 10 minutes of the game. Maloney made another great save in the 84th minute at the feet of Austrian captain Julia Sabota, before being substituted for Irish no 16, Amanda Budden a minute later. Ireland were undeterred however, and created more chances in the final stretch of the game when Gemma McGuinness was unlucky not to equalise in the 90th minute after a convincing shot narrowly went wide. Speaking after the game, Women’s U19 Manager Dave Connell said, ‘This game was a great opportunity for girls on the fringe of the squad to nail down places ahead of next month’s games. I’m disappointed with the result, but we can take a lot from the performance, especially as we were missing so many key players through injury and senior call ups. The girls were unlucky not to nab a goal or two, but our main focus now is remaining injury free ahead of the Elite Phase.’ Next up Ireland will face Italy, Sweden and hosts Netherlands in their Elite Phase group from April 4 to 9.   Republic of Ireland: Jillian Maloney (GSA 95 Phoenix Red, USA), Grace Wright (Challenge FC, USA), Lauren Murphy (Cork Women’s FC), Chloe Mustaki (Peamount Utd), Ciara O’Connell (Cork Women’s FC), Emma Hansberry (c )(Castlebar Celtic), Sara Rowe (Castlebar Celtic), Kelly Halligan (Blackburn Rovers), Orlagh Nolan (Shamrock Rovers), Carys Johnson (Everton), Katie McCabe (Raheny Utd) Subs: Amy O’Connor (Cork Women’s FC) for Nolan (45’) Gemma McGuinness (Greencastle) for McCabe (45’) Jetta Berrill (Peamount Utd) for Halligan.
