Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team player Denise O’Sullivan is hoping history can repeat itself in Saturday’s FIFA World Cup qualifier at Tallaght Stadium (3pm).
O’Sullivan is one of the graduates from the Irish U17 team which shocked Germany in June 2010 in the semi-finals of the UEFA European U17 Championship and knows a similar result on Saturday would cause even greater seismic activity across the football world.
‚ÄúTo beat any Germany team is a great achievement but there is a big step from U17 level to senior. We will try and do our best and see if Megan Campbell can score another free-kick again,‚ÄĚ says O‚ÄôSullivan.
‚ÄúIt‚Äôs a really important game for us. They are one of the best teams in the world and hopefully we can get the crowd behind us.‚ÄĚ
O’Sullivan is Ireland’s top scorer after three games of the campaign following goals against Slovakia and Slovenia and she was also on the mark in the recent win over Switzerland at the Cyprus Cup to bring her total to seven goals from 25 games, an impressive total given she only turned 20 in February.
The Ireland squad has now assembled at their base in Dunboyne House Hotel and trained today at Carton House and manager Sue Ronan was happy with how it went.
‚ÄúThe girls are all in great form and really looking forward to Saturday‚Äôs game. There are a couple carrying little niggles but we can deal with those over the next few days and hopefully I will be in a position to select from a full strength squad come Saturday. The individual performances at the Cyprus Cup have given me plenty to think about which is a nice problem to have,‚ÄĚ said Ronan.
Saturday‚Äôs game will kick-off at 3pm and admission to Tallaght Stadium will be ‚ā¨5 for adults and ‚ā¨2 for U16s and students. It will be preceded by a Girls Festival of Football which will be part of the FIFA Live Your Goals campaign and is being hosted by local Tallaght club Sacred Heart from 12.30pm to 2pm
