RAHENY UNITED are top of the Bus Éireann Women’s National League on goal difference over champions Peamount United after both sides secured their second win from as many games in the new season.
Raheny and Cork Womens FC was always likely to be a lively affair and so it proved at the Morton Stadium with the Dubliners earning a 3-1 victory.
All the goals arrived in an action packed opening period as Raheny netted twice inside 10 minutes courtesy of Rebecca Creagh.
Only four minutes had elapsed when Creagh buried a penalty and Cork Womens FC were under pressure.
Creagh clipped a second, but the Leesiders replied on 18 when Denise O'Sullivan trimmed the deficit.
Seana Cooke settled the home team with a third goal in the 28th minute and while it was a midfield battle from then on Raheny had inflicted
sufficient damage early on.
Peamount United had to survive a tricky test in the west before eventually seeing off the determined challenge of Castlebar Celtic.
The gritty Mayo outfit defended in resolute fashion throughout a tight game, but Peamount's class told in the end.
In the final quarter the Dubliners were able to nick two late goals to seal a hugely satisfying win considering Castlebar had proven to be so
rugged.
Peamount had been frustrated for large spells of the contest, but they hit the front in the 73rd minute when Stephanie Roche rattled the Castlebar net.
Roche's confident finish ensured she grabbed her second goal in as many games and then the insurance strike arrived on 79 when Sara Lawlor scored.
The talented Lawlor, who bagged a brace in the opening day success over Wexford Youths, ensured Peamount made a happy trip back to the capital.
Wexford might have been thumped first time out, but they delivered a purposeful performance to defeat newcomers DLR Waves at Ferrycarrig Park.
A 14th minute Linda Douglas goal gave Wexford a dream start, but then DLR Waves dug in and caused the home side plenty of problems.
But even though DLR Waves were highly competitive they were unable to get the goal their approach play deserved.
Wexford then ended the match with a real flourish as a 76th minute goal from the excellent Jessica Gleeson nudged them further ahead.
In stoppage time Wexford sealed the deal when Cherelle Khassel struck her second goal of the campaign.
