Preparations going well for UEFA Regions Cup
The Irish Amateur Team (Region 1) have just completed their warm weather training in the Algarve were they obtained another two victories on their path to the UEFA Regions Cup Finals in Zagreb later this month.
In their first game on Saturday they beat a local selection from Lagos 6-2 with David Lacey getting four and John Sherlock two.
In the second game they beat another local selection 7-0 with goals from Lar Dunne, Declan O' Connell, Daniel Loughran, David Welch, Derek Varian and a brace from Dean Kelly.
Gerry Smith brought 23 players to the Algarve and he names his 20 man panel this week meaning there will be major disappointment for some.
Commenting on the trip to the Algarve, Gerry Smith was delighted with the facilities and the work the squad got through and the way they applied themselves both on and off the pitch.
"It was never about the results in the two games, it was about learning how the players adapt in the heat, their recovery and how they interact as a group” he said, “they have had a chance to follow in the footsteps of the Senior team and taste the experience of Professional Players.
“We did all the basics well, we left nothing to chance but it will all count for nothing if we don't apply ourselves in Croatia.
“There are still three or four places up for grabs and it will be a difficult decision for me on who to select".
The team selections in the Algarve were:
Match A: Brendan O' Connell, Conor Dillon, Ken Howie, Paul Breen, James Walsh, Wayne Callaghan, Willie Molloy, Ray Whelehan, David Lacey, Peter Sherlock, Alan O' Duffy. Sub. Austin Hannon for Adrian Walsh.
Match B: Adrian Walsh, John Carroll, Adam Mitchell, Paul Mc Cabe, Ross Carrig, Lar Dunne, Declan O' Connell, Daniel Loughran, Dean Kelly, David Welch, Derek Varian.
Ireland have been drawn alongside Spain, Bosnia and Belgium in their section of the UEFA Regions' Cup finals in Croatia this Summer.
