REPORT: McClean inspires vital win in Vienna

Teamwork, collective courage and a dash of individual brilliance helped the Republic of Ireland record a 1-0 victory over Austria in Ernst-Happel Stadium to remain unbeaten in Group D.

After drawing away to Serbia and beating both Georgia and Moldova, Martin O'Neill's Ireland team had made an impressive start to FIFA 2018 World Cup qualifying. But this win bumps it up to excellent.

James McClean scored the only goal of the game in the 48th minute when he dropped his shoulder, zipped past his marker, and unloaded a shot that goalkeeper Ramazan Ozcan was never going to stop.

The Derry native has now scored three times in his last two appearances and his impact certainly helped secure a first Irish win over Austria since 1963. Although there were many other factors that contributed to the awarding of the three points.

Goalkeeper Darren Randolph had to be on full alert to deny Marc Janko, captain Seamus Coleman made the type of defensive tackle that inspires a team, and the home side failed to convert any of their six chances on target.

Austria started brightly and pushed O'Neill's men back inside their half in the early exchanges, but Ireland always looked dangerous especially with McClean's speed, Jonathan Walters' direct approach, and Wes Hoolahan's neat passing.

Harry Arter excelled on his competitive debut, while Glenn Whelan, Jeff Hendrick and substitute David Meyler each registered magnificent shifts in the midfield engine room. Behind them, the defensive line stood firm and made important blocks and clearances.

Ireland kept their hosts at bay during a late onslaught to show just how compact they have become as a unit and the team spirit helped to carry them to a third straight win.

Austria: Ozcan; Klein, Dragovic, Hinteregger, Wimmer (Ilsanker 78); Baumgartlinger, Alaba; Schopf (Schaub 58), Sabitzer (Harnik 73), Arnautovic; Janko.

Republic of Ireland: Randolph; Coleman, Duffy, Clark, Brady; Whelan (Meyler 22) Hendrick; Arter, Hoolahan (McGoldrick 78); McClean (McGeady 85); Walters.

Referee: S Karasev (Russia).

PREVIEW: Austria v Ireland

The final FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifier of 2016 presents the Republic of Ireland with the opportunity to strengthen their position in Group D - should they get a result against Austria.

Martin O'Neill certainly won't be taking anything for granted as he prepares his Ireland team for their fourth qualifying game of this campaign, knowing exactly what is at stake.

Injuries have ruled out several players, including Stephen Ward, James McCarthy, Eunan O'Kane, Daryl Murphy, and Shane Long, but new faces have been drafted in following the call-ups of Dundalk duo Andy Boyle and Daryl Horgan.

O'Neill has plenty of options for each position and the recall of Kevin Doyle to the squad allows him to add the 62-times capped international to his arsenal of attacking talent. Doyle, however, simply wants to help the team if called upon.

"It will be a tough game but the team has done really well in qualifying so far and we are ready for the game on Saturday," said Doyle, who last appeared for Ireland in March when he went off injured.

"I don't know if I will get on the pitch (against Austria), but it was a bit of motivation for that experience (in March) to not be my last involvement with Ireland. I just want to try to stay involved as long as I can. When you are a player you just try to stay fit and healthy and in form. I'm not making targets or anything like that...I just want to stay in the team at club level and if I get picked (for Ireland) then brilliant."

Doyle has been in terrific form for Colorado Rapids in MLS, but he is not the only player who O'Neill could turn to in an attempt to overcome Austria and maintain Ireland's unbeaten start to qualifying.

The game is Ireland's first visit to Vienna since 2013 and while they do not have a great record against Austria, current form is something that should provide them with confidence considering the excellent job that O'Neill is doing.

Even though it is still the first part of the qualifying campaign, the result could enhance or hinder either team's chances of making it all the way to Russia in 2018. Ireland are certainly aware of that and ready for the challenge.
