After a 2-1 loss to Iceland in their first match, Colin Bell's side knew a win was needed if the side was to have any chance of qualifying for May's tournament in Lithuania.

Amy Boyle Carr's (pictured above) strike in the early stages of the second half was the only goal of the game, that ensured Ireland a valuable three points.

Speaking after the match, Head Coach Colin Bell said his side were full value for the win.

"It was important to win the match after the Iceland defeat. The girls were a little nervous in the first-half. We tried to settle them down at half-time and looked far better in the second-half.

"Amy found herself in a good space and shot past the Azerbaijani goalkeeper into the bottom corner. After that we had chances to score a second. Azerbaijan only had one chance near the end of the game. The win was well deserved."

The team play their final match on Wednesday morning against reigning champions Germany. That game kicks off a 11am Irish time.

Ireland WU17: Bell looking for first win of Elite Round

Republic of Ireland Women's Under-17 Head Coach Colin Bell expects his side to bounce back tomorrow morning in their second game of the UEFA Women's Under-17 Championship Elite Round, in Germany.

Ireland lost 2-1 to Iceland on Thursday, and face an Azerbaijan side who suffered a 5-0 defeat to Germany in their opening match. Both teams will be looking to win to keep their hopes of reaching the UEFA Women's Under-17 Championship in Lithuania alive.

Bell said the team have used the past two days to work on the errors made in the defeat to Iceland.

"We picked up on the things we need to improve on. Conceding two goals in any game gives the side too much to do".

After losing 5-0 in their opening game, Bell expects a tough game against a battling Azerbaijan.

"The game they played against Germany was played in very difficult conditions. The pitch had a lot of snow on it, and the Germans coped well with the surface.

"Azerbaijan will try and upset us with a very physical game. We'll just have to be up for that, and find solutions to get around it."

Bell has reported no fitness concerns and expects to be able to pick from a full squad ahead of Sunday morning's match.
