The Republic of Ireland's U17 (Women's) squad created history by qualifying for the finals of the UEFA Championship of 2010.
It was an historic first time for Ireland to contest the finals of a major UEFA Championship at this level.
Ireland qualified in exemplary fashion with a string of results that stemmed from top-class performances from a group of players who were united, hard-working and ambitious.
Manager Noel King and his staff could take huge credit from a season of substantial achievement. They prepared the squad impeccably for competition and the returns reflected the happy relationship they helped foster with an outstanding group of players.
They defeated Slovenia, Turkey and Denmark in the first qualifying phase of the Championship to qualify for the second elite phase.
There they responded in typically spirited fashion to the improved standard and with victories over Ukraine and Sweden and a draw with Poland they advanced to the final tournament in Nyon in Switzerland.
Ireland excelled in the finals for they defeated the reigning champions, Germany, in the semi-final. They they were close to winning a final against Spain that stretched to 100 minutes, with the addition of twenty minutes extra-time, without producing a goal.
Spain prevailed 4-1 in the penalty shoot-out that decided the issue but Ireland had many reasons not to be too disappointed. Their performances were magnificent and their success in qualifying for the final tournament meant they automatically clinched qualification for the upcoming World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago.
Ireland's achievement is put into perspective by a review of their brilliant sequence of performances and results this season. The results were as follows
