Ireland advance to World Cup quarter-final with 3-0 win over Ghana

The Republic of Ireland women's U17 side continued their historic World Cup journey with a 3-0 victory over Ghana in their final FIFA World Cup, Group D match. That result, coupled with Brazil's 2-0 victory over Canada in the same group, means that the young ‘Girls in Green' advance to the quarter-finals of the competition as group winners and will now meet Japan in the quarter-final on Friday (September 17) at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Trinidad.

Ireland defeat Ghana 3-0 to advance to quarter finals

The Republic of Ireland women's U17 side play their final FIFA World Cup, Group D game against Ghana at 12 am (Irish time) at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago, knowing that a victory will send them through to the quarter finals of the competition. Currently, Ireland sit on top of the group on goal difference with all four teams on three points after two rounds of games. In the other Group D encounter, Brazil take on Canada and barring a high score draw in that game, Ireland could still make the quarter finals if they draw with Ghana. Irish legends behind U17 World Cup success

The 2009/10 season has been a historic year for international women's football in Ireland, particularly at U17 level as the Republic of Ireland reached the Association's first ever UEFA Championship final at women's level, defeating teams such as Sweden and Germany en route. The U17's are currently in Tobago where they will face Ghana in the final game of Group D in the FIFA Women's World Cup on Monday (September 13), knowing that a victory will send them to the quarter finals of the competition.

Ireland claim historic World Cup win against Canada

The Republic of Ireland Women's U17 side defeated Canada 1-0 on Thursday in the FIFA World Cup, courtesy of a stunning strike from Siobhán Killeen in the 75th minute at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Trinidad. In an epic battle with two well drilled teams fighting for their place in the quarter-finals, the Irish players dug deep to carve out a decisive victory which now puts them on top of the group.
