2006 eircom League Cup
Derry City enjoyed a hugely successful season in 2006 and they threatened to run away with all of the major trophies under manager Stephen Kenny.
The eircom National League of Ireland title was denied them as they finished runners-up to Shelbourne but they claimed two major Cup wins - the FAI Carlsberg Cup and the FAI eircom League Cup.
Their win in the League Cup was notable for a dramatic final contest with Shelbourne at the Brandywell Stadium where a capacity attendance saw the teams finish scoreless after extra time.
Derry ran into red card trouble at the end of the regular 90 minutes when they had goalkeeper David Forde and Cillian Brennan sent off.
Substitute goalkeeper Pat Jennings was brought in and he emerged the hero for Derry when the match went into the penalty shoot-out phase.
Derry converted their first three penalties and as Jennings saved Shelbourne's first three so Derry retained the eircom League Cup.
Prize money for the series left Derry City with the top prize of €15,000 and Shelbourne won €7,500. The beaten semi-finalists Limerick and Bohemians each won €2,500.
