Sean St. Ledger
|Club: Leicester City|
Total appearances: 37
Sean St. Ledger agaiin showed his ability to strike when a goal is most needed when he headed an equalising goal after 19 minutes of Ireland's opening match in the finals of EURO 2012 in Poznan. Sadly the goal did not help Ireland prevent Croatia from winning 3-1 but it illustrated the brave defender's commitment to the Irish cause.
He showed the same qualities earlier when he scored a magnificent goal against World champions Italy with a courageous diving header in the World Cup tie at Croke Park on 14/10/'09 to ensure they qualified for a play-off. He was outstanding in both matches against France as Ireland went close to making the finals in South Africa and his performances in such a high-profile contest suggested he will play many times for Ireland.
He contributed another important goal when he scored against Slovakia in Zilina on October 12, 2010, in the UEFA Championship qualifying tie.
Sean joined Preston North End in 2006 following a four year spell with Peterborough United, and made more than 100 appearances for the Lilywhites. He won his first Ireland call up for the EURO 2008 qualifier against Germany and featured on the bench.
He had a spell on loan with Middlesbrough before returning to Preston North End during the 2009/'10 season. He came through a difficult first match with Ireland in impressive style when he made his debut against Bulgaria in a World Cup qualifying tie in Sofia on 06/06/'09 - a match that finished 1-1.
Sean had won a regular place in the course of the World Cup qualifying campaign and was partner to Richard Dunne again when the qualifying campaign for EURO 2012 kicked off with a win over Armenia in Andorra on September 3rd, 2010.
He missed the second half of the 2010/'11 season because of injury and returned to share in the defeat of Italy in a friendly in Liege in June 2011.
Sean spent some time on loan to Middlesbrough from Preston North End and in the Summer of 2011 signed a three-year contract for Leicester City.
He had a loan spell with Millwall in 2013 and played in the friendly draw with England in May just weeks after appearing at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final for the Lions. Unfortunate to be forced off with injury after starting in the second game of the Martin O'Neill era against Poland in November 2013.
