The Republic of Ireland defeated Georgia 2-1 today in their opening tie in Group 8 of the World Cup qualifying tournament. Kevin Doyle put Ireland ahead on 13 minutes before Glenn Whelan extended the lead with 20 minutes left. Georgia pulled goal back in the last minute. The match kicked-off at 5.00 pm in Mainz.
