The Republic of Ireland senior squad will be heading to sunny climes in May after the FAI confirmed that a training camp will be held in the Algarve region of Portugal during the week prior to the friendly match against Serbia on May 24 in Croke Park.

The training camp will enable newly appointed Ireland senior team manager Giovanni Trapattoni and his staff an excellent opportunity to work on tactics with his players ahead of the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign which begins in September.

The Irish squad’s last training camp held in the Algarve two seasons ago was hailed as a tremendous success.

Ireland have two warm-up matches already arranged ahead of their first competitive fixture of the campaign which comes on September 6 when they travel away to face Georgia.

They host Serbia at Croke Park on Saturday, May 24 and are also due to meet Norway in Oslo on Wednesday, August 20.

Giovanni Trapattoni, who was appointed to the position as Republic of Ireland senior manager last Wednesday, has added another member of staff to his backroom team. Fausto Rossi has been appointed as fitness coach to work with the squad of players.

Marco Tardelli was confirmed as Assistant manager to Trapattoni last Thursday and will base himself in Ireland throughout the month of April to improve his English.

Tardelli was in Italy’s 1982 World Cup winning squad and scored a memorable goal in the final against West Germany. He played under Trapattoni at Juventus and led Italy to the UEFA European Under-21 title as manager in 2000.

He was also at the helm for Inter Milan, Bari and Arezzo in his homeland of Italy as well serving with the national team of Egypt.

68-year old Trapattoni will take up his post on May 1 when he has finished his commitments with the Austrian club, Red Bull Salzburg.
