A total of 150 clubs and centres in 23 counties have received grants from the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Mr. John O'Donoghue under the 2007 Sports Capital Programme.

The biggest recipients are the Eircom League of Ireland clubs Finn Harps and Waterford United who have each received €750,000.

Finn Harps grant will go towards the cost of constructing their stadium in Stranorlar, Co Donegal, while Waterford are building a new stand at the Regional Sports Centre.

There are also grants of €500,000 for Dublin club Phoenix FC and the Galway & District League who own Terryland Park where Galway United are based. 

Welcoming the Minister’s announcement, FAI Chief Executive John Delaney said:

“The Government and Minister John O’Donoghue have once again shown their commitment to improving sporting infrastructure throughout the country by announcing grants of €85million under the 2007 Sports Capital Programme and we applaud their efforts.

“They have also recognised the magnificent work being done by football clubs and centres across Ireland to improve their facilities and the €17million which they have awarded under this year’s scheme will make a tremendous difference to how we cater for our players, officials and spectators.

“Football is the biggest participation sport in this country and these grants will make a big difference to some of the 450,000 people who participate in our game every week.”
