FAI Referee School of Excellence Gets Underway

Last weekend saw the Sixth FAI Referee School of Excellence began its two year program to produce the next generation of top level match officials.

Twenty seven students from an original application of forty five have gone through a rigorous process of interviews, match assessment, fitness tests and examinations on the Laws of the Game.  These represent Junior and Schoolboy leagues from around the country who were originally nominated by the local FAI Referee Observer.  During the selection process they have been heavily involved in the FAI Emerging Talent Program fixtures which is very appropriate as this would be a Referee version of same.

The participants went through two days of workshops and practical exercises led by former FIFA Referee Ian Stokes, a former SOE graduate, Declan Hanney, Martin Moloney and Tony Ryan as well as guest Tutors Gerard Perry, John Ward, James Finnegan and FAI Referee Fitness Coach Kieran McKeown.  Also present was Ignatius Martin who was one of the originators of Referee education in Ireland.

The success of the Referee SOE can be gauged by the fact that 96% of the current Airtricty League Panel are former students on this program, including our FIFA Panel members.
