FAI Umbro Intermediate Cup

One of the most coveted trophies for Intermediate clubs in Ireland, the FAI Intermediate Cup has a proud history. Avondale United, from Cork, claimed the trophy for the second consecutive season in 2011/'12 and for the fifth time in their history when they beat Cherry Orchard, from Dublin, 2-1 after extra time of the final. Cherry Orchard had also been Avondale's opponents in the final the previous season and again lost narrowly, this time 0-1.

Avondale United 2 - 1 Cherry Orchard (AET)

It was a dramatic FAI Umbro Intermediate Cup final as both teams put themselves in position to win the match but it was Avondale that were victorious for the second year in a row winning 2-1 after extra time. Cherry Orchard could be forgiven for thinking they had won the cup as they led 1-0 in the third minute of extra time thanks to a 66^th minute strike from Graham McCarthy but Avondale had other ideas and equalized in injury time through Kevin Long sending the match to extra time. The second for Avondale came in the second period of extra time through Declan Cahill for what proved to be the winning goal.

Avondale Utd. from Cork are featuring in their third final in a row, a remarkable achievement considering the quality that exists in the competition. Avondale’s rivals for the title of cup specialists are Cherry Orchard, their opponents on Sunday.
