Goals galore in Cork

The first day of action in the Michael Ward Cup in Cork produced plenty of goals with a total of 13 being scored in the two games in Cork as the 2012 FAI Intermediate Inter-League competition kick-off with a bang. The hosts and holders, the Munster Senior League, beat the Connacht FA 2-1 after a scoreless first half in O'Shea Park, Blarney. Mark Sullivan opened the scoring after 48 minutes and Danny Long added a second 30 minutes later. Conancht caused Munster hearts to flutter when they pulled back a goal in the first minute of injury time through Alan O'Donovan but the home side held on to get off to a winning start. In Passage there were goals galore as the Leinster Senior League and Ulster Senior League played out a thrilling 5-5 draw. Davitt Walsh fired Ulster into the lead after just five minutes but Leinster bounced back to equalise through Adam Foley and take the lead when David O'Sullivan netted in the 32nd minute. However, Walsh struck again a minute before half-time to ensure the sides went in level at the break and two minutes into the second half Gerry Gill fired Ulster into a 3-2 lead. The tables were turned midway through the half with three goals in a blistering four minute spell. First Darren Lavey equalised for Leinster in the 68th minute only for Keith Hegarty to restore Ulster's lead two minutes later. But, it was a short-lived advantage as a minute after that Victor Ekanem levelled for Leinster. That left it 4-4 and when Ekanem scored his second in the 89th minute Leinster could have been forgiven for thinking they had finally got their noses in front when it mattered. But Ulster refused to capitulate and Seamus Friel equalised in the 90th minute to ensure a share of the spoils after a most remarkable game.
