Spot-kick victory for Bohs in FAI Ford Cup

Bohemians  0 - 0  Dundalk (AET)

Bohs win 4-2 on pens

Bohemians needed a penalty shoot-out victory over Dundalk to book their place in the FAI Ford Cup quarter finals.

Paul Keegan struck home the decisive penalty kick to secure the Gypsies' place in the last eight.

The sides ended 90 minutes scoreless, and not even 30 minutes of extra time were able to deliver a winner.

A lively start to the match saw two players given their marching orders inside the opening 13 minutes.

Gary Deegan was first to leave the pitch, the Bohs midfielder shown a straight red after apparently becoming involved in a situation with an opposition player.

Dundalk sought to use their extra man to their advantage. However, after 12 minutes the visitors were also reduced to 10 men after Michael Daly was shown red.

In an even match, the sides largely cancelled each other out. Anto Murphy struck the first penalty successfully for the home side, with Ger Rowe also converting his team's first spot kick.

Dundalk were handed the advantage when Jason Byrne - the league's top marksman - had his spot-kick saved. However, Paul McAreavey then struck the crossbar to keep the score at 1-1.

Goalkeeper Brian Murphy took a penalty for Bohs to put them 2-1 up and promptly followed his goalscoring heroics by saving Kevin McGinley's effort.

Paddy Madden's effort made it 3-1, with Alex Williams reducing the deficit to 3-2. However, Paul Keegan struck his effort home to give the home side a 4-2 win on penalty kicks.
