FAI Ford Senior Cup

SligoCup

FAI Ford Senior Cup

The oldest football competition in Ireland, the FAI Senior Cup is the blue riband event for clubs in Ireland. Clubs from the Airtricity League compete with junior and intermediate clubs in a competition that dates back to 1922.

Sligo retained the FAI Ford Cupin 2011 with a penalty shoot-out win after extra time against Shelbourne. The final of the 2010 saw Sligo Rovers reach the final for the second consecutive season and, after losing to Sporting Fingal in 2009, they were winners this time. They beat Shamrock Rovers 2-0 on penalties after the teams failed to score over 90 minutes and extra time. Goalkeeper Ciaran Kelly was their hero as he saved all four Rovers' penalties. Kelly stepped off the substitutes bench in the final minute of extra time in 2011 and was again a hero. He saved two of Shelbourne's three attempts from the spot and Sligo won it 4-1 after a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes. Our picture shows Fingal celebrate their win in 2009.
